This week, my wife and I were on a flight home when I glanced through my Kindle library and came across Praying for Your Prodigal by Kyle Idleman. I don't remember where or when I got it, but I was bored, so I decided to read this short book.
As I read, I was impressed by a few things. First, Kyle Idleman provides a brief yet profound explanation of the parable of the prodigal son throughout this book. He explains cultural issues in a way that draws you into the story Jesus told. He also ties it to the present day, providing powerful truths for those who have prodigal children of their own.
Second, this book is deeply personal. It contains real letters from real parents written to or about their wandering children. They express their hurt and disappointment. These personal stories remind the reader that they are not alone.
Third, this book focuses on comforting biblical truths. Each chapter closes with a relevant passage and a prayer. These point the reader to the true source of hope. Our heavenly Father is always watching and working in the lives of those we love. He is the loving and merciful Father who cares for us. That brings hope, no matter how desperate the situation is.
I believe this book is helpful for a few groups of people:
Those with prodigals: This book can be a great encouragement to those who have prodigals. The stories will remind you that you do not suffer alone. The prayers may provide ideas on how you can pray for and love your prodigal. The parable of the prodigal son will remind you that we have a loving heavenly Father who cares for you and your prodigal.
Pastors & Counselors: This book can be a help to pastors and counselors. It can provide insight into how your people struggle and how you can encourage them.
Those who want to study the parable of the prodigal son: This book is a quick read. If you would like more insight into the parable of the prodigal son, this is a good place to start.
