Back in November, I had many thoughts swirling through my head. As I often do, I took pen to paper and jotted down a few reflections. Below is the journal entry I entitled "Simple Excellence."
Ours is a simple faith. Jesus came, died, was buried, rose again, and will return. God, in his grace, extends the free gift of salvation to any who will receive it by faith. As a comfort, encouragement, seal, and empowerment, the Holy Spirit indwells us. God accomplishes this work, we have only to accept and rely on his sovereign grace.
Ours is a simple calling. We are to present the Word of God to all. We are to make disciples, teaching others about Christ.
Yet, ours is a calling to excellence. As we proclaim God’s Word, as we incarnate Christ to those around us, as we seek the guidance and empowering of the Spirit, we ought to convey to the best of our ability the majesty of God. We ought to carry out our simple calling excellently.
This search for excellence must be tempered by grace. God comes to us in our failings, his strength made perfect in our weakness. God is infinitely perfect, we are not. While we pursue excellence, we must learn to lean on God’s grace and extend grace to others.
Let us seek excellence in our simple calling, always striving to present our best, though it be as filthy rags, to our great, good, and holy God.
